Basic Precautions for Operating a Crane
- Crane operators need special training to operate a crane. Only after passing the assessment of the relevant departments and issuing a certificate of qualification can they start working. It is strictly forbidden for unlicensed personnel to operate a crane.
- Before operating a crane, the operator should check whether the various devices of the crane are normal. Check whether the steel cable meets the safety regulations and whether the brakes, hydraulic devices and safety devices are complete and reliable. When the crane is parked or driving, the distance between the front or outer sides of the wheels and the edges of the trenches and pits shall not be less than 1.2 times the depth of the trenches and pits, otherwise anti-tilting and anti-collapse measures shall be taken.
- When operating a crane to lift heavier objects, the heavy objects should be lifted about 10 cm off the ground first, and the functions of the crane should be checked. Only when they are confirmed to be normal can the work continue.
- The operator should cooperate closely with the commander and obey the signal command of the commander. When operating a crane, the operator must immediately obey the emergency stop signal issued by anyone.
- When operating a crane, it is strictly forbidden to stand on the hoisted objects, and it is strictly forbidden for all personnel to stand under the hoisted objects.
- When the crane is working near the power transmission line, a safe distance should be maintained. When operating a crane in rainy and foggy weather, the safe distance should be increased to more than 1.5 times.
- When operating a crane, a certain distance should be maintained between the hook and the pulley to prevent the winch from breaking the steel cable or the boom from turning over.
- When the wind force at the crane operation site reaches level 5, no lifting operation with a large wind-exposed area shall be carried out; when the wind force reaches level 6 or above, no lifting operation shall be carried out. When stopping work or taking a break, it is not allowed to hang the hoisted objects in the air.
- After the crane is finished working, it should be parked in the specified safe position, and all control handles should be placed in the middle position.
Build a Safe Crane Operating Culture
- Crane safety is not just about the operator; it is a collaborative effort. Here are some ways to foster a safety-conscious environment:
- Pre-Lift Preparation: Perform a pre-lift inspection before each crane operation and discuss potential hazards that may be present during the day’s tasks.
- Regular Reviews: Regular crane operation reviews can discuss specific crane safety operation topics and keep everyone updated on best practices.
- Safe Operation Rewards: Recognize and reward operators who consistently demonstrate safe work practices. This approach can help keep the safety culture of crane operations in the minds of the workforce.
