There are a large variety of gantry cranes available, and all of them have their individual benefits. However, three-way adjustable gantry cranes are capable of multiple functions because of their stability and adjustability.

Just like most gantry cranes, the three-way gantry sports a true A-frame gantry design and is portable, meaning it can reach all corners of your plant to lift and move materials. They are quickly disassembled for transport by service trucks, making them extremely useful for practically any application. But, the main function of a three-way adjustable gantry is its adjustable span, height, and tread.

This type of control and flexibility allows workers to use them on uneven floors, along with easy passage through doorways, aisles, and under other overhead obstacles. Most three-way adjustable gantries come in either all steel or steel with an aluminum I-beam.

Three-way adjustable gantries also provide extra stability because they are designed so that the I-beam is free to pivot as it self-centers over the load. Furthermore, the A-frame design helps to maintain greater stability, eliminating the swaying motion that can be common in other gantries.

The adjustable span uses a lock design to securely hold the I-beam during adjustments and when set, while the height is adjustable in six-inch increments using push/pull pins on the main legs. The adjustable tread is designed using a cable assembly that is bolted inside the caster frame tubes to prevent overspreading. Three-way adjustable gantry cranes also deliver cantilever options—up to four feet (25 percent of the span) when using counterweights.

For more than a hundred years, a Reading, Pennsylvania Construction Services Company has provided everything from hauling services for rail yards to millwright, rigging and transporting heavy machinery up to 100 tons. Since 1912, they’ve certainly had to change with the times. The company now has a warehouse filled with heavy machinery, a full crew of workers, and the ability to rig and move heavy loads.

In addition to hauling merchandise and heavy equipment to stores in Reading, the company also offers residential services—moving large items like hot tubs and pianos. After moving to their warehouse in Reading, their focus changed to storing everything from forklifts to pretzel ovens in their massive 275 thousand square-foot facility.

The company’s warehouse manager, Kevin McDevitt, ensures that any tools and heavy machinery stored at their Pennsylvania warehouse are shipped out to their customers quickly and efficiently. When they moved into their new building several years ago, McDevitt was tasked with finding a productive, safe way to move machinery to and from storage, and onto a flatbed truck in the warehouse bay.

In their previous warehouse, they used a 15-ton overhead bridge crane to move machinery. Their new facility in Reading, however, had multiple limitations, making it impossible to use that same 15-ton overhead bridge crane to move heavy machinery and equipment. The warehouse’s decreased ceiling height and lack of floor space made it difficult to find the right material handling solution for their needs. The guide angle bolts to the floor, typically at the base of a wall. The kit includes guide rollers on one drive and one idler assembly, each equipped with polyurethane bumpers.
• Trackless Drives: Ideal when you need to keep your shop floor clear of any tracks or angle guides, a selector switch on the control pendant selectively turns each motor on and off to move the gantry.

Gantry cranes are typically used in general industry for mechanical contractors, power generation facilities, water treatment plants, and metal fabricating facilities.
